To showcase the capabilities of this partnership, Aeryon and ING jointly participated in Exercise SPARTAN BEAR at CFB Petawawa.  Exercise SPARTAN BEAR is the largest military training exercise in Canada since 2003 and was designed to improve the brigade’s conventional all-arms proficiency, with the units achieving greater collective expertise in dismounted war-fighting as a battalion group.

ING and Aeryon were pilots and operators of the Aeryon Scout, a small, lightweight Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) that is remote-controlled from the ground by computer.  The Scout was used as a key reconnaissance tool for soldiers as they were lead into potential dangerous situations.  The Scout was able to identify enemies amongst civilians and locate obstacles on the road, alerting soldiers of potential dangers as they entered new areas.

The Aeryon Scout system was carried by a single operator in one backpack and successfully completed 7 missions throughout the first day of the exercise.  Despite extreme winds of up to 80 km/hr and heavily forested areas, the Scout safely returned unharmed after each mission.  The missions had the Scout operated at long ranges, ensuring the team was out of danger while the Scout performed its reconnaissance duties.  To provide the best possible real-time imagery, the Scout flew with its VideoZoom10X payload which features a 10 times optical zoom.

“The Scout’s ability to be launched in minimal time to intelligence queuing and to handle the high winds we encountered was amazing.” commented Pat Brophy, director of UAV Services for ING Engineering. “The troops were quick to adopt the technology and were eager to tell us to ‘Launch the bug!’ so they could see what they might be marching into.”  Brophy was in the field at SPARTAN BEAR supporting the exercise.

The Aeryon Scout and Scout related services are available immediately from ING Engineering.
