Waterborne Demonstrations – a key feature at DSEi 2011

Visitors to DSEi 2011 will be able to see dynamic Waterborne Demonstrations held on all four show days. They will start with a 15-minute period when a number of high-performance small craft and RIBs will be displayed operating in front of the Grandstand, which is located in Royal Victoria Dock near Dock Exit 7 in the South Hall.

Operation Vision
The initial display will be followed by a 15-minute boarding operation on the water, entitled ‘Operation Vision’. This will include a number of companies presenting equipment used in marine security operations, as well as UAV helicopters, with video links to a large screen.

Companies taking part are as follows:

  • Saab Communications is responsible for the radio network integration of legacy equipment being used in the demonstrations. This will be a seamless direct patching of different radio technology, eg VHF-HF and even mobile phones.
  • Sounds to Go Media will provide the PA system, centred on the Harbour Master’s office. The system is portable and will allow the commentator freedom of movement during the demonstration. This has been combined with Drumgrange’s products to produce a long-range Acoustic Hailing Device specifically for maritime use.
  • Ultra Electronics’ Hyperspike Mass Notification System projects a full, natural sound voice and attention-getting alert signal to listeners in a full 360° omnidirectional pattern.
  • BCB International will be showing its smoke dispensers and giving demonstrations of its boat entanglement device.
  • Northrop Grumman C2PC command and control software will be on display, which will include software that allows the collection of biometric information from suspicious characters. n Nautilus International’s GARC will demonstrate its man-overboard equipment to rescue a person from the water.
  • Selex Elsag will be demonstrating data compression techniques and Inmarsat will facilitate the transmission of this data via a satellite link.
  • Two UAV helicopters will be displaying their capabilities, each providing a feed onto the video screen by the grandstand. The AT30 from Advanced UAV Technology is petrol-driven and has an operating duration of 2.5 hours. It weighs 7kg and has a speed of up to 60mph. From Marlborough Communications, the smaller, electric powered Datron Scout can remain aloft for approximately 30 minutes. It is compact and extremely portable. Both UAVs have advanced computer-assisted flight controls and both may be equipped with a variety of cameras or other sensors.
  • XSMGWorld produces a range of XSR Interceptors whose monocoque construction, with a deep ‘V’ hull, is built using aerospace composites. This improves the vessels’ power-to-weight ratio, capacity and overall handling.
  • Avon Inflatable/Zodiac MILPRO will be showing the agility and capability of its Zodiac Hurricane range of RIBs.
  • Griffon Hoverwork will showcase a capability demonstration of one of its 2400TD hovercraft currently in service with 539 Assault Squadron Royal Marines.

Operation Swimmer
Operation Swimmer will present companies such as Reson Offshore and Sonardyne, which are displaying and operating underwater swimmer detection sonar, deployed against a live diver target. This will take place on the cargo deck of HMS Tyne, berthed in Royal Victoria Dock, close to Dock Exit 2 in the South Hall.

There will also be a demonstration of underwater ship search equipment on board HNLMS Snellius, berthed at Dock Exit 6 in the South Hall, near the Holland Pavilion, and a demonstration of other maritime security equipment on board HMS Tyne.
