UAF researchers use drones to evaluate sea ice thickness at Nome and aid incoming tanker

FAIRBANKS — Camera-equipped drones flew over Nome this week to help a Russian fuel tanker, the Renda, get a perspective on the sea ice near the town’s harbor.
The Renda is sailing to Nome to deliver fuel. The town’s supply is expected to run out before spring. The tanker is accompanied by U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Healy, which opens paths for the tanker.

Police use drone helicopter in search

Chatham-Kent police will use a drone helicopter today to search for Brandon Sands, a 25-year-old Wallaceburg man missing since Dec. 24.
Sands was last seen leaving a house party around 1 a.m. Police say he left after feeling ill and vomitting and was not wearing a coat. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, brown running shoes and a white sweater.

Some places in this world are just too dirty, dull or dangerous for human pilots to fly. An airspace in the latter category is anywhere near gas flares in Alaska's oilfields. With only a few seconds of warning, flames blast high in the air from a network of pipes, releasing the stress of sucking oil from deep in the ground.

Waterborne Demonstrations – a key feature at DSEi 2011

Visitors to DSEi 2011 will be able to see dynamic Waterborne Demonstrations held on all four show days. They will start with a 15-minute period when a number of high-performance small craft and RIBs will be displayed operating in front of the Grandstand, which is located in Royal Victoria Dock near Dock Exit 7 in the South Hall.

DSEi: Scout mini UAS offers instant ISTAR capability

UK firm Malborough Communications is demonstrating the Aeryon Scout vertical take-off and landing mini-unmanned air system (UAS) at London's Defence & Security Equipment International (DSEi) exhibition.
The 1.2kg (2.6lb) quad-rotor mini-UAS, designed and manufactured in Canada, has recently seen service with the Libyan rebels.
The Scout has been designed as a highly portable system for use by dismounted infantry or special forces personnel, said Mark Harbin, C4ISTAR and sensors capability manager at Malborough.
