FAA Makes Progress with UAS Integration

For more than five decades, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has compiled a proven track record of introducing new technology and aircraft safely into the National Airspace System (NAS). Most recently, the agency has been working to ensure the safe integration of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) in the NAS.

Canada once again is shopping for new warplanes at a time when the future of military aviation is in flux.

We last were in this position in the 1950s, when Canada developed at great expense the Avro Arrow, a terrifically fast and sophisticated jet designed to intercept Soviet bombers. The Arrow rolled out just as the threat of incoming bombers was eclipsed by ballistic missiles, for which there was no defence at the time. Canada suddenly had the world's most sophisticated obsolete aircraft.

Traditional methods for remote wildlife and environmental research can be unreliable, dangerous and expensive. Researchers from the University of Alaska Fairbanks used the Aeryon Scout to demonstrate the increased reliability and effectiveness of conducting ship based wildlife monitoring using a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) UAV.

In November 2010, a police lieutenant from Parma, Ohio, asked Vanguard Defense Industries if the Texas-based drone manufacturer could mount a “grenade launcher and/or 12-gauge shotgun” on its ShadowHawk drone for U.S. law enforcement agencies. The answer was yes.

The Aeryon Scout micro-UAV contributed to security preparation and response measures for the G50 Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul, South Korea – demonstrating the real-world application of small UAVs for event and VIP security

It can now be disclosed that in advance of the arrival of government delegations and heads-of-state from around the world, the Aeryon Scout™ was already flying in Seoul, South Korea. In partnership with SIS Corporation of South Korea, local military and police were being trained to use several Scout systems as part of advance security preparations for the international summit on March 26-27, 2012.

Tim Mites, a longtime player in the fishing industry, had a better idea for counting Stellar sea lions. He'd heard a lot about the tiny flying cameras, better known as aerial drones used by the military in Afghanistan.

On a 21-day cruise through the Aleutian Islands last month, the team from the University of Alaska Fairbanks along with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Marine Mammal Laboratory evaluated the use of unmanned aircraft to supplement other Steller sea lion surveys in the western Aleutians Islands.

Unmanned aircraft are already being used in Canada for police crime scene investigations and wildlife research. Border patrol agents and the media in the U.S. are also beginning to use such tools, which the public largely associates with the military.

But non-military drones have many other potential uses, including surveillance. What are the privacy risks and implications?
