            <description><![CDATA[<p>Traditional methods for remote wildlife and environmental research can be unreliable, dangerous and expensive. Researchers from the University of Alaska Fairbanks used the Aeryon Scout to demonstrate the increased reliability and effectiveness of conducting ship based wildlife monitoring using a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) UAV.</p>

<p>Tim Mites, a longtime player in the fishing industry, had a better idea for counting Stellar sea lions. He'd heard a lot about the tiny flying cameras, better known as aerial drones used by the military in Afghanistan.</p>
<p>On a 21-day cruise through the Aleutian Islands last month, the team from the University of Alaska Fairbanks along with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Marine Mammal Laboratory evaluated the use of unmanned aircraft to supplement other Steller sea lion surveys in the western Aleutians Islands.</p>
